What’s New Balance’s favourite colour? Grey. Which is why the Boston-based brand invites us to celebrate Grey Day, a special day in the calendar to honour the shade and to unveil grey silhouettes that keep the truly timeless tone and legacy alive. Grey is more than just a colour to New Balance, its part of its heritage. A bold design decision back in the ‘80s for runners, it went against the status quo of box-fresh white, creating the blueprint for normcore styles to come.
As part of the four-shoe line-up is this hairy rendition of the 996, reflecting both Santis’ and New Balance’s love of mixed materials. The muted palette lets the textural pigskin suede and mesh tooling come to the forefront with navy underlays and “N” logos contrasting mesh peeking out at the toe, collar and tongue. Beneath the shadowy shade is a buttery ENCAP midsole, cushioning every step with lightweight foam. Neutral yet impactful, they showcase the limitless possibilities of grey.
