Takahashi remains faithful to the original Daybreak
At the helm of Undercover, Jun Takahashi has established himself as a designer with world-class skill and a subversive agenda. Here, he resumes his relationship with sports giant Nike, taking a retro sneaker with a notorious athletic pedigree – the Daybreak – and reworking it for his discerning clientele. Takahashi remains faithful to the original Daybreak toebox, even leaving the shoe’s original track running detail – a small rubber panel – in place at the tip of the toe; it’s towards the back that the famously revolutionary designer lets his irreverent streak shine through. Here, Takahashi rips up the rulebook – and tears out the traditional Daybreak heel panel while he’s at it, replacing it with a geometric, triangular insert in jet black suede and cutting the Nike Swoosh in half in the process. The grey foam midsole is spattered in black speckles and branded with Takahashi’s name, while the heel tab is marked with a ‘U’ for Undercover in gleaming bright white.
