Reprising a decade-long collaboration, Undercover and Nike come back together again
Reprising a decade-long collaboration, Undercover and Nike come back together again, and this time, it’s one of the sneaker titan’s heritage sneakers that gets the subversive Jun Takahashi treatment. The Daybreak is one of the world’s first iconic running shoes, and Takahashi gives respect where its due, leaving the classic, instantly recognisable toebox intact and even hanging on to minute details like the rubber tread that extends up the front. Uppers are rendered in bright, uncompromising cobalt nylon while black suede accents add textural interest and tonal depth. So far, so normal - but remember, this is Undercover, and something’s got to give. A soft white leather Swoosh graces the vamp – until it’s unceremoniously sliced in half by a triangular heel panel so fiercely futuristic, it jars (in the best way). Bordered by geometric black plastic panelling, the heel is finished in dove grey suede, a pale shade that serves to highlight the transition from trad sneaker to space age style. Though the design doesn’t leave much room for doubt, Takahashi marks the speckled foam midsole with his own name and Undercover’s… just in case.
